Monument

pilgrim monumentA monument for the Pilgrims!

On the 31st of May 2003 mayor Lenferink of Leiden has unveiled a monument to the departure of the Pilgrims on the Vliet. The statue is situated by the bridge which was the boundary of the city and which was passed by all Pilgrims on their way to the New World and an uncertain future.
The monument symbolizes the step from the old into the new world. At its base is a memorial stone with the names of all the Pilgrim families who made the journey.

The monument was designed and made by  sculptor Gert van der Woude (1945). His work consists of figurative three dimensional art concerning varied subjects.  He works in stone, wood and bronze.
